Thames was born in Trenton, New Jersey and grew up in Pleasantville, New Jersey. He attended Central High School in Trenton, where he played baseball and football. Thames was drafted by the Yankees in the 30th round of the 1997 Major League Baseball draft. He made his MLB debut with the Yankees in 2002.
In 2003, Thames hit .288 with 22 home runs and 58 RBIs in 98 games for the Yankees. He became a regular member of their lineup in 2004, hitting .262 with 26 home runs and 65 RBIs in 136 games. Thames continued to play for the Yankees until 2006, when he was traded to the Tigers.
With the Tigers, Thames became a power hitter; he hit a career-high 32 home runs in 2007 and 31 home runs in 2008. He also set career highs in batting average (.277), RBIs (75), and walks (61) in 2008. Thames became a free agent after the 2009 season and signed with the Rangers.
Thames played two seasons with the Rangers before being traded to the Dodgers midway through the 2011 season. He finished his career with Los Angeles in 2012. In 11 MLB seasons, Thames batted .247 with 165 home runs and 486 RBIs.
