The Steinbrenner Family

The New York Yankees are an American professional baseball team based in the Bronx, New York City. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. They are one of two major league clubs based in New York City, the other being the National League’s (NL) New York Mets. The Yankees began play in the 1901 season as the Baltimore Orioles (no relation to the modern Baltimore Orioles). In 1903, Frank Farrell and Bill Devery purchased the franchise after it began facing financial difficulties, and moved it to New York City, renaming the club the New York Highlanders.

George Steinbrenner

George Michael Steinbrenner III (July 4, 1930 – July 13, 2010) was an American businessman who was the principal owner and managing partner of Major League Baseball’s New York Yankees. During Steinbrenner’s 37-year ownership from 1973 to his death in 2010, the longest in club history, the Yankees earned seven World Series titles and 11 pennants. His outspokenness and role in driving up player salaries helped make him one of the sport’s most controversial figures.

Steinbrenner was also involved in the Great Lakes shipping industry. Known as a hands-on baseball executive and tough negotiator, he had a penchant for making splashy headlines with his mouth. Though loved by Yankees fans, he was reviled by many baseball players and fans for his allegedly autocratic and meddlesome ways.

Hank Steinbrenner

Hank Steinbrenner is theson of George Steinbrenner, who bought the Yankees in 1973. Hank took over as managing general partner after his father’s death in 2010. He has a Bachelor of Arts from Wesleyan University and a Masters in Business Administration from Columbia University.

Hal Steinbrenner

Hal Steinbrenner is the eldest son of George Steinbrenner and the current principal owner of the New York Yankees. He took over control of the team in 2007 after his father passed away. Under Hal’s leadership, the Yankees have won one World Series championship (in 2009) and have made four appearances in the ALCS (in 2010, 2012, 2017, and 2018).The Steinbrenner family has been involved in ownership of the Yankees since 1973, when George Steinbrenner purchased the team from CBS. In 2010, the foundation funded the construction of a new stadium for the Staten Island Yankees, the team’s minor league affiliate. The stadium, located in Richmond County Bank Ballpark, cost $50 million to build.
