The New York Yankees are one of the most iconic baseball teams in history. But who actually owns the team?

The Steinbrenner Family
The Steinbrenner family has been the majority owner of the New York Yankees since 1973. The late George Steinbrenner bought the team for $10 million, and his sons Hank and Hal currently run the team. The Steinbrenner family also owns a minority stake in the YES Network.
George Steinbrenner was an American businessman who was the principal owner and partner of Major League Baseball’s New York Yankees. During Steinbrenner’s 37-year ownership from 1973 to his death in 2010, the Yankees earned seven World Series titles and 11 pennants. According to Forbes, he was the 20th-highest-earning owner in sports in 2008.
Hank Steinbrenner is an American businessman. He is a co-owner and co-chairman of the New York Yankees. Hank is the son of George Steinbrenner and the brother of Hal Steinbrenner.
Hank was born on October 2, 1955, in Cleveland, Ohio. He graduated from Culver Military Academy in 1974 and from Cleary University in 1976. He then worked for his father’s shipping company, Kinsman Marine Transit Company, until he joined the Yankees organization in 1980. Hank became co-chairman of the Yankees in 2007.
In addition to his work with the Yankees, Hank is a partner in Steinbrenner Hotel Properties, LLC and a member of The Poynter Institute for Media Studies Board of Trustees.
Hal Steinbrenner is the chairman of Yankee Global Enterprises and the principal owner of the New York Yankees. He is the eldest son of George Steinbrenner and his first wife, Joan Zieg. His paternal grandfather, Henry Steinbrenner, was a shipbuilding magnate who ran the Kinsman Marine Transit Company. Hal’s father bought the Yankees in 1973 for $8.7 million.
George Steinbrenner passed control of the team to Hal and his brother Hank in 2007, but remained as the face of the franchise until his death in 2010. Hal took over as chairman at that time and has been running the team since. He has made it a priority to return the team to its former glory, winning a World Series championship in 2009 (their 27th overall).
Under Hal’s leadership, the Yankees have made it to the playoffs every year since 2010 (with the exception of 2014). They were runners-up in the World Series in 2010 and 2012, and won another championship in 2020. The Yankees are currently valued at $5 billion, making them the most valuable franchise in baseball.

The Yankees began play in 1901 as an expansion team called the Baltimore Orioles (not to be confused with the present-day Baltimore Orioles), moving to New York in 1903 and adopting their current name one year later. From 1923 to 2008, the Yankees’ home ballpark was Yankee Stadium; in 2009, they moved into a new stadium also called Yankee Stadium.
The team is notorious for its massive payroll, which has led to accusations of unfairness from other teams and fans. In 2014, Forbes valued the Yankees at $2.5 billion, making them the most valuable sports franchise in America.
The Yankees Entertainment and Sports Network (YES Network) is an American cable and satellite television regional sports network owned by 21st Century Fox through its Fox Sports Media Group, and infamous New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner’s family-controlled company, Yankee Global Enterprises.
The Yankees’ History
The Yankees have been one of the most successful baseball teams in history. They’ve won 27 World Series titles and 40 American League pennants. The Yankees have been owned by several different owners throughout their history. The current owner is Hal Steinbrenner, who took over the team from his father George Steinbrenner in 2008.
Babe Ruth was one of the most accomplished baseball players in history. Born George Herman Ruth, Jr., he was nicknamed “The Bambino” and “The Sultan of Swat” for his hitting prowess. A large, charismatic player, Ruth quickly became a fan favorite and helped boost baseball’s popularity in the 1920s.
Ruth started his career with the Boston Red Sox and helped them win three World Series titles. In 1920, he was sold to the New York Yankees, where he spent the remainder of his career. With the Yankees, Ruth won four more World Series titles and established many league records. He retired in 1935 with 714 home runs, a record that stood for 39 years until it was broken by Hank Aaron.
Ruth’s massive popularity helped turn the Yankees into one of the most successful sports franchises in history. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936, and his legacy continues to this day. The Yankees are often referred to as “the house that Ruth built” due to his immense contribution to the team’s success.
Joe DiMaggio was born on November 25, 1914, in Martinez, California. He was the eighth child of Italian immigrants. His father, Giuseppe, had moved to the United States in 1898, and his mother, Rosalia, followed in 1900. The family settled in San Francisco, where Giuseppe worked as a fisherman. In 1922, when Joe was seven years old, Giuseppe died of pneumonia.
Rosalia took her children and moved to North Beach, a neighborhood with a large Italian population. Joe attended St. Peter’s Grammar School and later Commerce High School, where he played baseball and basketball. After graduating from high school in 1932, he worked for a time as an usher at the Fox Theatre in San Francisco.
In 1933, DiMaggio began his professional baseball career with the San Francisco Seals of the Pacific Coast League (PCL). He played for the Seals for four seasons. In 1936, he led the PCL with a batting average of .398. That year he also married Dorothy Arnold, an actress whom he had met two years earlier.
Mickey Mantle was one of the most popular ballplayers in Yankees history. He played for the team from 1951 to 1968, winning seven World Series titles. He was a three-time MVP and a 16-time All-Star. After his retirement, he remained involved with the Yankees as a broadcaster and coach.
The Yankees’ Rivalries
The New York Yankees are one of the most successful teams in Major League Baseball. They have won 27 World Series championships, which is more than any other team in baseball. The Yankees have a lot of rivals, but their two biggest rivals are the Boston Red Sox and the New York Mets.
The Boston Red Sox
The Boston Red Sox are the Yankees’ most heated rivals. The Sox and the Yankees have been playing each other since 1903, and the rivalry is often considered to be one of the most intense in all of sports. The two teams have faced each other in the American League Championship Series a total of ten times, with the Sox winning seven of those series. In 2004, the Red Sox finally broke their long-standing “curse” and won the World Series, much to the dismay of Yankee fans everywhere. Since then, the two teams have met in the AL Championship Series three more times, with the Yankees winning in 2009 and 2010 and the Red Sox winning in 2013.
