The Yankees began play in 1901 as an expansion team called the Baltimore Orioles (no relation to the modern Baltimore Orioles). Frank Farrell and Bill Devery purchased the franchise and moved it to New York City, renaming the club the New York Highlanders. The Highlanders were officially renamed the Yankees in 1913.
The team is owned by Yankee Global Enterprises, an LLC controlled by the family of the late George Steinbrenner, who purchased the team in 1973. Brian Cashman is the team’s general manager, and Aaron Boone is its manager. The team’s home games were played at Yankee Stadium from 1923 to 1973 and from 1976 to 2008. In 2009, they moved into a new ballpark also called Yankee Stadium. The stadium was rebuilt in a retro-style replicating that of their original stadium, opened as a replacement for it on April 16, 2009. The team is perennially among MLB’s leaders in attendance and has led MLB in attendance for all but four seasons from 1998–99 through 2019–20. Many fans and sportswriters consider this one of sports’ most successful franchises; ESPN ranked it 6th among North American professional sports teams when it launched ESPN Sports Polls during 1994–95 NBA season;[2] FoxSports ranked them second since 2002–03 NFL season,[3] ranking behind only Dallas Cowboys with ten consecutive seasons currently running;[4] since 1992–93 NHL season,[5] Yahoo! Sports has ranked them all-time 5th among North American professional sports teams while Bleacher Report placed them all-time 2nd behind only Green Bay Packers;[6][7][8] according to Forbesduring 2006–07 NBA season,[9][10] they were world’s wealthiest sports franchise valued at US$1 billion till 2007 and still remain so as of 2020.[11][12][13]
The team’s name
The team’s name was first used in 1913, when the franchise was known as the New York Highlanders. The name was changed to the Yankees in 1918, when the franchise was purchased by Colonel Jacob Ruppert.

The Yankees began play in the 1901 season as the Baltimore Orioles (no relation to the current Baltimore Orioles). Frank Farrell and Bill Devery purchased the bankrupt team for $18,000 and moved it to New York, where they renamed it the New York Highlanders. The team played its home games at Hilltop Park, situated at 165th Street and Broadway, a few blocks north of where Yankee Stadium stands today. In 1913, the Highlanders moved from Hilltop Park to Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox, also in order to rent the smaller stadium. With hires like Miller Huggins and Ed Barrow, the Yankees’ fortunes changed.

In 1913, the New York Yankees adopted the team name “Yankees” from the old New York Highlanders. The word “Yankee” has a varied history and can be traced back to Dutch origins. It was originally a derogatory term for someone from New England, but eventually came to be a nickname for Americans in general. The team has been known as the Yankees ever since.
