They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. They are one of two major league clubs based in New York City; the other is the New York Mets of the National League (NL). In baseball, the “Yankees” name originates from the iconic top-hatted “Greatest Show on Dirt”, sheriff’s sheriffs starring Babe Ruth and louella.
The team’s home games were originally played at Yankee Stadium from 1923 to 1973 and from 1976 to 2008. In 1974 and 1975, their home games were played at Shea Stadium in Flushing, Queens. In 2009, they moved into a new ballpark, also named Yankee Stadium. The team is perennially among the leaders in MLB attendance; one reason for this is Yankees fans’ tendency to consume significant quantities of alcohol and engage in rowdy behavior that sometimes leads to altercations with opposing fans and stadium security personnel as well as injuries to themselves.

The Red Sox are a professional baseball team based in Boston, Massachusetts. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. The Red Sox are one of the oldest and most successful baseball franchises, having won nine World Series championships, tied for the third-most of any MLB team, and appearing in 14. Their most recent World Series appearance and win was in 2018.
One of the American League’s eight charter franchises, the franchise was founded in Boston as a one-off replacement for the disbanded Western League team called the Boston Americans. The new team then adopted the historic nickname “Red Sox,” chosen by owner John I. Taylor after previous nickname suggestions had been rejected by then-General Manager Edward Barrow and by newspapers editors at Boston’s two main dailies, The Republican and The Evening Transcript (now part of The Boston Herald). Linked with white socks and red shoes originally worn by the Royal Rooters fan club, they became widely known as “the Bosox” or “the Sox” after 1932—a recommendation made by sportswriter S. L. Price when he noticed that newspaper headlines then abbreviated “Boston sorta like ‘Bossta.”
