The Yankees have the oldest team in baseball
One reason the Yankees are bad is that they have the oldest team in baseball. As of June 2017, the Yankees had an average age of 30.8 years old, which is nearly a full year older than the next oldest team, the Boston Red Sox. The Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants are also ahead of the Yankees in terms of average age.
The Yankees have also been hampered by injuries to key players this season. Outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury, who is 33 years old, has been limited to just nine games due to a hamstring injury. Third baseman Chase Headley, who is 32 years old, has also been injured for much of the season and has appeared in just 44 games.
The Bronx Bombers have also struggled to score runs this season, ranking 21st in MLB with an average of 4.16 runs per game. In contrast, the Yankees averaged 5.53 runs per game last season, which was the second best mark in baseball. A big reason for their offensive struggles has been the lack of production from their star players. Shortstop Didi Gregorius, who was an All-Star last season, is batting just .238 with 10 home runs and 46 RBIs. Matt Holliday, who was signed as a free agent before this season, has been a bust as well, batting just .229 with 13 home runs and 34 RBIs in 89 games.

The team’s prized offseason acquisition, pitcher James Paxton, has also been sidelined with an injury.
