George is unhappy with his job as Assistant to the Traveling Secretary for the New York Yankees. He is constantly getting into arguments with his boss, Mrs. Templeton, and he feels like he is not doing anything to help the team. George decides to quit his job and start his own company, called “Yankee Roast Coffee”.
George’s company is a success, and he starts to become more confident in himself. He no longer feels like he is living in his parents’ shadow, and he begins to assert himself more. However, George’s new-found confidence starts to get the better of him, and he begins to make some poor decisions.
First, George gets into an argument with Mrs. Templeton’s son, Jimmy. Jimmy is a big fan of the Yankees, and he doesn’t wantGeorge to sell coffee at Yankee Stadium. George doesn’t take Jimmy’s threats seriously, but he should have; Jimmy vandalizes George’s car and leaves him a nasty note.
Next, George tries to sell coffee to the Yankees’ rivals, the Boston Red Sox. This does not go over well with the Yankees’ fans, who begin to boo George whenever he appears at Yankee Stadium. Finally, George decides to sell coffee at Shea Stadium during a Mets game. This is the last straw for the Yankees’ front office, and they fire George from his job as Assistant to the Traveling Secretary.

When Mr. Wilhelm resigns, George tries unsuccessfully to apply for his job. From being traded to the Seattle Mariners, to getting fired by Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, George’s relationship with the Yankees was always on the rocks.
