The American League is one of the two major leagues in baseball.

The American League is one of the two major professional baseball leagues in the United States and Canada, and is also one of three existing major leagues of Major League Baseball (MLB). It developed from the Western League, a minor league based in the Midwest, which eventually aspired to major league status. It is sometimes called the Junior Circuit or The Junior circuit because it claimed Major League status for the 1901 season, 25 years after the formation of the National League.

The American League has 15 teams, arranged into three divisions: East, West, and Central. The winner of each divisional playoff series (consisting of best-of-five games) meets the runner-up of another division in one of two best-of-seven Championship Series; if two teams from the same division make it to the ALCS, they play each other, regardless if they finished first or second in their division. Since 1998 baseball’s postseason has expanded from four teams to eight: five division winners plus three wild cards—the three teams with the best records who did not win their division—competing in two best-of-five Division Series leading to a best-of seven American League Championship Series. In 2014 MLB added a second wild card team to each league bringing additional excitement and meaning to September baseball games.

The American League operates under unique rules compared to its counterparts in other professional sports leagues like MLB’s National League or basketball’s NBA. These include designated hitters—a position unique to AL teams that does not exist in its other leagues—and allowing high school graduates to be drafted straight into the AL without first spending time in minor league baseball systems as is typically required before being drafted by an MLB team.
