Yankees Championship History
The Yankees have won 27 championships in their history. The first championship came in 1923, when they defeated the New York Giants in the World Series. The most recent championship came in 2009, when they defeated the Philadelphia Phillies in the World Series. The Yankees have also won the American League pennant 40 times.
1923 – first championship
In 1923, the Yankees won their first American League pennant and went on to defeat the New York Giants in the World Series. The “Bronx Bombers” won their second consecutive World Series in 1927, behind the hitting of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. The Yankees dominated baseball in the early 1930s, winning four more World Series titles between 1932 and 1936. After a few years of rebuilding, they returned to the top in 1941, behind the great play of Joe DiMaggio, and won yet another championship.
The Yankees’ next period of dominance came during the late 1940s and early 1950s. Led by Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford, Mickey Mantle, and Billy Martin, they won five more World Series titles between 1949 and 1953. After a brief rebuilding period in the mid-1950s, they were back at the top of baseball again in 1958. That year, they defeated the Milwaukee Braves in a thrilling seven-game World Series that is considered one of the greatest ever played. The Yankees continued to be a force in baseball throughout the 1960s and 1970s, winning two more World Series titles in 1977 and 1978.
The 1980s were tough years for Yankees fans. Despite having some great players on their roster, such as Don Mattingly and Rickey Henderson, the team failed to win a single World Series title during the decade. In fact, they only made it to baseball’s biggest stage twice (1981 and 1982), losing both times. Things turned around for the Bronx Bombers in the 1990s though, as they won three straight World Series championships between 1996 and 1998. Led by stars like Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera, they added another title in 2000. After missing out on the playoffs in 2001 (due to a heartbreaking loss on the final day of the season), they bounced back to win three more championships between 2003 and 2009.
1927 – first World Series win
The New York Yankees have a long and storied history, with some of the greatest players to ever play the game donning the iconic pinstripes. The team has also been extremely successful, winning 27 World Series titles, which is more than any other team in baseball.

The Yankees really became a dynasty in the late 1940s and early 1950s, winning five World Series titles in a row from 1949 to 1953. Led by such greats as Joe DiMaggio and Yogi Berra, the Yankees were almost unstoppable during this time period.
After a bit of a lull in the 1960s and 1970s, the Yankees once again became a force to be reckoned with in the late 1970s and 1980s, led by players such as Reggie Jackson and Derek Jeter. The team won two more World Series titles in 1977 and 1978, then added another three titles in 1996, 1998, and 1999.
